PHMB stands for polyhexamethylene biguanide. PHMB 20% solution can be used as its hydrochloride salt. The biguanide group is the active part of PHMB. Compared with other biguanide compounds, PHMB is an environmentally friendly multi-purpose new cationic polymer, and its hydrochloride form indicates that PHMB has cationic properties or positively charged ions, making it a particularly effective solution for eliminating a variety of microorganisms . PHMB can be compounded with other antibacterial agents to achieve a synergistic effect.
 

Product Parameters

Performance Features:
1. Broad-spectrum antibacterial, with significant antibacterial effects, capable of killing Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, fungi (including various ringworm and mold species), and yeast.

2. PHMB has very low toxicity, LD50 > 5000 mg/kg, causing no irritation to skin or eyes, non-allergenic, safe for long-term use. Fabrics treated with PHMB are harmless to humans and the environment, without any biological toxicity.

3. PHMB exhibits high antibacterial efficiency and good heat stability, not decomposing at high temperatures used in melt spinning processes. It also possesses corrosion inhibition properties and can withstand over 50 washes while maintaining its stability. Compatible with a wide range of cationic and nonionic auxiliaries, it can be used in combination with other biocides.

4. PHMB does not affect the original physical and mechanical properties, color, or dyeing performance of fibers or fabrics.

5. PHMB is applicable across a wide pH range, being stable and effective within the range of 1-11.
6. PHMB is suitable for antibacterial finishing of cotton, viscose fiber, and their blended fabrics (with cellulose content > 30%). Its safety has been recognized by the U.S. FDA and EPA.
7. PHMB produces low foam and can be used for CIP in industrial pipelines and water treatment systems. It maintains high activity in both hard and soft water conditions.
 

Application

Applications of PHMG:

1. Water treatment: PHMB can be used as a chlorine alternative in swimming pools, for industrial water (e.g. cooling towers), surface disinfection, hospitals, algaecide for concrete surfaces, and general-purpose surface disinfectant.

2. Food industry: e.g. preservative for mink feed, disinfectant for beet sugar, pre-cleaning of fresh vegetables, cleaning solution for food contact equipment.

3. Leather industry: preservation of raw hides, veterinary applications, teat dips, teat baths, preservation of animal blood, veterinary procedures, preservatives for veterinary products.

4. Cosmetics: cCeaner cited in the European Cosmetics Catalogue.

5. Pharmaceuticals: surgical wound disinfectant, active ingredient in nasal drops/eye disease treatment products.

6. Other applications: preservative for the paper industry, disinfectant for secondary oil recovery.
